Chargers vs. Saints: Philip Rivers TD in final minute puts San Diego in lead at halftime

Philip Rivers threw a touchdown pass in the final minute of the first half, putting the San Diego Chargers up 17-14 over the New Orleans Saints heading into halftime.

Drew Brees may have broken an NFL record, but a late touchdown pass from Philip Rivers has the San Diego Chargers up, 17-14, over the New Orleans Saints at halftime on Sunday Night Football. Brees broke the record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass when he hit Devery Henderson for a 40-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

That tied the game at 7-7, as Rivers struck first when he hit Robert Meachem on the previous drive. That was a 15-yard reception, and his first of two touchdown passes, as Meachem was also the target on the pass that put San Diego in the lead in the final minute of the half. That play was a 44-yard strike in which Malcolm Jenkins looked as though he were biting on some serious play action, despite the fact that there was none on the play.

Brees also hit Marques Colston in the second on a 19-yard touchdown pass, while Nick Novak accounted for San Diego's other three points with a 20-yard field goal, filling in for an injured Nate Kaeding. Novak also missed one from 55 yards out in the second quarter.

Rivers and Brees are both having strong games, with two touchdowns each. Rivers has 212 yards through the air, while Brees has 181. Ryan Matthews and Ronnie Brown have combined for 74 yards rushing, while New Orleans has only managed 10, seven and four yards out of Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles on the ground
