The San Diego Chargers dodged a huge bullet in the third quarter of Thursday Night Football. After the Kansas City Chiefs punted away early in the quarter, Eric Weddle fumbled the return. The call was close, and arguments could be made for both sides but, as the pictures below show, it would be hard to overrule the initial ruling of Chargers fumble.
Eric Weddle fumble ends up not costing Chargers
We break down Eric Weddle’s TNF fumble with screenshots.

In this first picture, Weddle is going down and his wrist has hit the ground with the ball still appearing secure.
This second picture shows the elbow on the ground with the ball coming loose.
The officials did not provide an explanation as to why they upheld the fumble call, and it perplexed Mike Mayock as much as it perplexes us. There are questions of whether the wrist is part of the hand, and then whether the ball came out because his elbow hit the ground.
Whatever the case, the Chiefs were unable to capitalize as Ryan Succop missed a subsequent field goal attempt.
