Chargers dominate the Chiefs on Thursday night, 31-13

Kansas City committed its usual share of turnovers, giving San Diego the ball four times. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, two of those turnovers went straight into the end zone. Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride laid out “the most Chiefs play of the night,” one of the spots where it all went wrong for Kansas City on the evening:

Chargers blog Bolts From The Blue wrote after the game that the win should keep Turner in the Chargers coaching spot for at least another week, and a win that will open a whole lot of questions about whether or not this is the Chargers team that will be showing up to games for the rest of the season:

San Diego will take on the Buccaneers next Sunday in Florida as the Chargers look for another, bigger win to add to their resume. Both of San Diego’s last two wins have come against Kansas City, with three less-than-stellar losses in between. With the AFC West currently clustered together fairly closely, there’s a chance that the Chargers could come out on top of the division with a strong run over the next few weeks.

So, tough times for Chiefs fans.

Rivers didn’t need to do much as the run game picked up the pace in the second half.

Fantasy Impact: He nearly had a three-touchdown day, but Rivers turned the ball over by throwing a pick in the end zone before halftime. Even though he eased up a bit after the first half, Rivers still came away with a decent day, considering he was playing with two new receivers as well.

Fantasy studs/duds: Rivers was nearly perfect Thursday, completing 18 of 20 pass attempts for 220 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Tight end Antonio Gates caught three of those passes for 43 yards, including one touchdown.

Odds/Gambling: The Chargers, who entered as 7-point favorites, covered the spread with ease.

But it wasn’t a normal onside. It was a double fake onside.

Can’t say I remember seeing something like this before. It almost worked but after a lengthy scrum the Chargers came out with the ball.

The Chiefs saw their No. 1 running back take a hard shot in the fourth quarter, as Jamaal Charles was hit helmet-to-helmet by Donald Butler after catching a pass and trying to get upfield. Charles remained on the ground for a couple of minutes, and then managed to run off the field on his own power.

After being checked out on the sideline, reports indicate Charles has a neck injury. His return is questionable, but the Chiefs likely won’t risk any more setbacks while they’re down 31-6.

Pretty sure that’s holding.

Gates finished the first half with three receptions for 43 yards and San Diego’s lone touchdown.

Rivers needs to continue looking Gates’ way and, if he does, the two will continue tallying up impressive fantasy numbers.

Dorsey returned to action for the first time in five weeks tonight, after sustaining a calf injury in the Chiefs’ Week 3 game against New Orleans. He had been listed as questionable throughout the week.

Rivers headed into the locker room with 179 yards, one touchdown and one pick. He’s throwing the ball well, but turnovers continue to haunt him.

With the game still up for grabs, expect Rivers to continue throwing often in the second half. His fantasy numbers should improve unless he keeps finding ways to turn the ball over.

Rivers was 14-of-14 at one point in this game. His final two passes were a throwaway with 35 seconds remaining -- a smart move considering San Diego was in field goal range -- and then this interception.

Allen left the game and was seen heading back to the Chiefs locker room with what could be a concussion. The Chiefs selected Allen in the second round of the 2012 NFL starter and he’s quickly developed into an impact player for Kansas City. Allen has played in all eight games this season, starting the last five games at left guard.

Mathews has eight carries for just 25 yards on the night so far. He’s made a few good bursts up the middle, though he hasn’t been finding any big holes so far. He made his way back out for the following drive, so that should be a positive sign for his status going forward. His playing time should be closely monitored throughout the night.

So you can excuse his behavior here after the Chiefs were stuffed on a third-and-1 and had to settle for a field goal.

The way I look at it, he should be happy with a field goal. The Chiefs were minus-18 on turnovers coming into this game. Any drive that doesn’t end in a turnover is a good one. That’s how low the bar has been set.

The little kids expression -- ‘Someone else is cheering?! -- is the best part.

But this is the Chiefs we’re talking about. Of course something had to go wrong and they had to get in their own way.

There was some sort of miscommunication. Cassel tried to hit Baldwin down the left side of the field and the ball sailed past him. Cassel was visibly upset at something and Baldwin appeared to be responding to him, even seemingly fired up in the huddle.

The guy who was signed four days ago (and was on the Chargers last year) looked pretty good on the game’s first passing play. Here’s Ajirotutu with the full extension to make the 28-yard gain:

7-0 Chargers and the Chiefs still haven’t led in a game this season.

Thursday’s game will be the second meeting between the teams this season. San Diego beat Kansas City, 37-20, in Week 4.

It’s been a tough year for both of these teams, with both head coaches on very hot seats. The Chargers are currently sitting at 3-4 while Kansas City is a disastrous 1-6. San Diego started out the season well, but has now dropped three consecutive games, including last week in Cleveland, where the Chargers couldn’t find the end zone in a 7-6 defeat.

It’s the same old story for a team that can never seem to win with any kind of consistency. The Chargers are the type of team who can win any given week, but just as easily find a way to lose. Much of this has to do with the lack of leadership on the team which starts (and maybe ends) with Norv Turner.
