It's a terrible shame to waste a trick play, and the St. Louis Rams were probably wondering if all those gimmicks from practice this week would go to waste with a lead on the San Francisco 49ers through the first two quarters. Then Jeff Fisher saw his chance.

The St. Louis Rams used a fake punt to get an edge on field position.

Backed up near the 49ers' end zone on a fourth down, the Rams were going to punt. Instead, rookie Johnny Hekker, a former high school quarterback, threw a 21-yard pass to Rodney McLeod, a safety, with 44 seconds left to play.
The decision left a few fans scratching their heads. With the quarter almost over, the conventional wisdom says the Rams punt the ball and hold off the 49ers through the end of the half. However, the 49ers had some success moving the ball. This was a play called with field position in mind, taking away the risk of San Francisco pushing into field goal range and eating into the Rams’ lead at the half.
