Robbie Gould doesn’t like sloppy Soldier Field

Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould apologized for criticizing the field conditions at Soldier Field, but stood by his concerns for improved field conditions in the NFL.

US PRESSWIRE

Chicago bears kicker Robbie Gould appeared in a radio interview on Tuesday and criticized the field conditions at Soldier Field, calling the field uneven and torn up. The field was messy during the Bears' 13-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night, as it had been soaked during a rainy week leading up to the game. Gould went 2/3 during that game and scored the Bears' only points of the night. He mentioned that if field conditions in Chicago continue to be spotty, it could affect his decision when he reaches free agency after the 2013 season.

Gould issued an apology through the team on Wednesday, but stood by his comments that the field could be in better condition:

“I need to apologize to the grounds crew at Soldier Field and our grounds crew for my recent comments regarding the field. I have since learned a lot more about the NFL’s policies and the measures that are taken at Soldier Field to ensure a reliable and safe playing surface. It was my mistake to speak prior to having a full understanding.”

Soldier Field is one of the few NFL stadiums that still features a natural grass playing surface, as many have been replaced by artificial FieldTurf.

Gould, who is in his eight season with the Bears, is one of the most accurate field goal kickers in NFL history. Excluding his rookie season, he’s never had a season where he’s made less than 83.3% of his field goals, and his career average is almost 86%.
