Rob Gronkowski injury: Pats TE reportedly has broken arm

Rob Gronkowski reportedly broke his forearm on his team’s final extra point in a 35-point victory, and could be out for the rest of the regular season.

The New England Patriots' decision to keep the heat on offensively in a 59-24 romp over the Indianapolis Colts came with a major consequence, as star tight end Rob Gronkowski reportedly broke his forearm on the team's final extra point.

Gronkowski left the game late and was set to receive X-rays, which Tom E. Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England reports revealed a broken forearm. Adam Schefter added the detail that the injury was suffered on an extra point with the team already up 34 points.

Questions will no doubt be raised as to why Gronkowski, who leads all tight ends in the league in yards receiving and touchdowns, was still in the game with the score so lopsided, or why the 2011 Pro Bowler was even on the unit preventing extra points from getting blocked. The team certainly had other options - with Aaron Hernandez hurt and Daniel Fells not dressed, the Pats still had Michael Hoomanawanui and Visanthe Shiancoe dressed at the tight end position.

Curran reports the timeline for an injury like Gronkowski's is 4-6 weeks, meaning the third-year player out of Arizona could be sidelined for the rest of the regular season. With 137 yards and two touchdowns on the day, Gronkowski had become the first tight end in NFL history to record ten touchdowns in back-to-back-to-back seasons and has been Tom Brady's favorite red zone target since his rookie campaign.
