Colts vs. Patriots 2012: Indianapolis gets reality check in loss

Indianapolis couldn’t hang with New England on Sunday.

Jim Rogash

The Indianapolis Colts were routed by the New England Patriots on Sunday, 59-24. Indianapolis had won four games in a row prior to that defeat, and is still in position to make a run for a playoff slot in the AFC. But as SB Nation's Stampede Blue pointed out Sunday, the rebuilding Colts are not yet ready to match up with the conference's top squads.

Today we saw just how far this team has to go yet. Sure, this team can still get to nine wins and a playoff berth. But we saw today just how outmatched the Colts are against one of the best teams in the AFC.

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck threw for more than 300 yards in the loss, but he also tossed three interceptions. The Colts took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter before a 17-point outburst helped New England take control of the contest. The Patriots scored at least 14 points in each of the last three quarters.

Despite the defeat, Indianapolis is in second place in the AFC South, though its odds of catching first-place Houston are slim. The Colts will try to bounce back when they meet the Buffalo Bills next Sunday.
