Jaguars vs. Texans 2012: Jacksonville misses out on grand upset opportunity

The Jacksonville Jaguars missed out on opportunity after opportunity and eventually lost in overtime to the Houston Texans, 43-37.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a golden opportunity to upset the Houston Texans Sunday, but could not capitalize on any of the several chances to put the game away, eventually losing in overtime, 43-37.

The Jaguars held a 14-point lead after scoring a touchdown with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, but Matt Schaub and the Texans offense got the ball back and marched down the field and scored to cut the lead to seven. Jacksonville promptly went three-and-out on the following possession, then allowed the Texans to drive and score again, and with 1:34 remaining in regulation, the game was tied.

In overtime, the Texans had possession after each team had converted a field goal earlier in the period. Schaub threw an interception, which put the Jaguars on the Houston side of the 50-yard line. Needing only a few yards to move into field goal range, Jacksonville managed to not move the ball at all, turning it over on downs and losing soon after on an Andre Johnson touchdown pass.

Adam Stites of SB Nation’s Jacksonville Jaguars blog, Big Cat Country, took the heartbreaking loss in the best fashion possible--with optimism looking towards the future.

In a game that was very successful for the Jaguars offense, the team received contributions from players that have been very quiet for most of the season. Chad Henne, in replacement of the injured Blaine Gabbert, completed 16-of-33 passes for 354 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions...While the loss is frustrating considering the opportunities the Jaguars were afforded, it also presented positives that haven’t come often in a 1-9 season.
