Panthers’ Ron Rivera unlikely to be fired midseason

The second-year coach expects to stick around – for now.

David Banks

Ron Rivera will likely remain the head coach of the Carolina Panthers through the rest of the season, according to Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer:

Rivera has coached the Panthers to a 2-8 record this season. Carolina has lost seven of its last eight, including two in a row with a 27-21 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Under Rivera in two seasons, the Panthers are 8-18. They finished third in the NFC South last season and sit last in the NFC South this season.

Rivera replaced John Fox after the 2010 season. Fox led the Panthers to three playoff appearances in his nine years as head coach, but the 2010 Panthers won just two games. They were outscored by 212 points, the most in franchise history.

Rivera, 50, played nine seasons in the NFL from 1984-92, all with the Chicago Bears. The former linebacker was a second-round pick in the 1984 NFL Draft.
