Jahvid Best injury: Lions RB out for remainder of 2012 season

The Detroit Lions announced on Friday that running back Jahvid Best will remain on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for the remainder of the 2012 season.

Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best has been dealing with lingering concussion symptoms for quite a while, and the team announced on Friday that Best will sit out the rest of the season. The decision was based on recommendations made by medical experts involved in the situation.

Detroit’s first-round pick from the 2010 NFL Draft has seen his career completely derailed by recurring head injuries that date back to his time in college and continuing to present day. Lions Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Martin Mayhew explained the decision to shut down Best in a press release:

”There has been subsequent evaluation and consultation regarding Jahvid since our last update (October 15). As has been the case throughout, we have deferred to the medical experts and support their current recommendation that Jahvid not return to the field this season.

“Javhid’s approach to this situation and his adherence to the process and protocol have been exemplary,” Mayhew continued. “No one has worked harder or shown more dedication than Jahvid has over the past year.

“As disappointing as this decision is for us and Jahvid, we do believe it is in his long-term best interest.”

Best played in 16 games during his rookie season and racked up 555 yards and four touchdowns on 171 carries along with 487 receiving yards on 58 receptions. Last season, he only appeared in six games. He never saw the field in 2012.

The Lions (3-4) are set to take on the Jaguars (1-6) in Week 9.
