Raiders ‘discussed’ bigger role for Terrelle Pryor

Oakland head coach Dennis Allen is a man in need of solutions.

It might be time for Terrelle Pryor to get a new tattoo, one that says "starter." Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen revealed Monday that the team has "discussed" using the third-string signal caller from Ohio State recently, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Pryor is still third on the depth chart, behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. The Raiders are 3-8, having lost four straight games ahead of a Week 13 showdown with the similarly hapless Cleveland Browns. Allen hinted that the team could look to Pryor to rejuvenate its sagging fortunes and add another dimension to an offense scoring less than 20 points per game this season.

Allen was less clear on exactly what role Pryor could play for the Raiders. Replacing Palmer seems unlikely, but Pryor could be used in special packages designed to take advantage of his mobility and big arm. The 49ers did something similar with Colin Kaepernick this season, until he took over as the starter following Alex Smith's concussion.

The Raiders head coach gave Pryor a vote of confidence on Monday afternoon:

“He’s working to get better and he’s working to improve. I’ve seen improvement in Terrelle. He’s gotten better as a quarterback. He’s continued to work. I don’t think any of us feel like he’s the finished product, including himself, but he has worked to improve.”

Pryor was a third-round pick in the 2011 Supplemental Draft, the last draft pick overseen by late owner Al Davis. He led all Raiders quarterbacks with two preseason touchdowns this year as well as a 59.4 completion percentage and 7.8 yards per attempt.
