Jason Babin cut by the Eagles

Eagles continued making roster moves Tuesday, releasing veteran Jason Babin.

Defensive tackle Jason Babin as been released by the Philadelphia Eagles, the SB Nation blog Bleeding Green Nation is reporting Tuesday. Babin, a nine-year veteran, has spent the last two seasons with the Eagles where he made the Pro Bowl last year.

This season, Babin had compiled 26 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks. Babin had a sack and four tackles in Monday night's 30-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The loss dropped the Eagles to 3-8 overall.

Here’s what head coach Andy Reid had to say about the move:

“We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years,” said Andy Reid.“ We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of younger guys in the defensive line rotation.”

The move comes as a surprise to those in the national media, as the Eagles signed Babin to a five-year, $28 million contract in July of 2011 after he made the Pro Bowl with the Tennessee Titans. However, locally this move was a long time coming.

Babin, who will turn 33 in May, was a first-round selection by the Houston Texans in '04. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.
