Sean Payton’s contract reportedly voided by NFL

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton will be a free agent in 2013, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton will become a free agent after this season, after the NFL reportedly voided a contract extension that would've kept him with New Orleans through 2015, this according to Adam Schefter.

With Payton on the market, he'll likely be sought after by every NFL team looking to make changes at head coach. There's already speculation around the league that Payton could land in Dallas, where he coached as an assistant from 2003 to 2005 — which means he also has a prior relationship with quarterback Tony Romo.

The issue with Payton’s contract extension was language that the league said would have set a bad precedent for other coaching contracts. There was a specific clause that would have allowed Payton to walk away from the deal if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired or left the New Orleans organization, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Payton was suspended by the league for the entire 2012 season after a bounty scandal. The Saints are 2-5 this season.
