Chiefs release cornerback Stanford Routt

The Kansas City Chiefs waived cornerback Stanford Routt in order to pick up defensive tackle Shaun Smith.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived defensive back Stanford Routt and signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith, head coach Romeo Crennel told Sports Radio 810's Kurtis Seaboldt on Monday.

The move helps the depth on the defensive line, where Glenn Dorsey is sidelined with a calf injury. Dorsey missed four games leading into this Sunday's outing against the San Diego Chargers, but he reinjured the calf and left the game.

Smith returns to Kansas City after playing for the Chiefs in 2010, one of the nine-year pro's most productive seasons in the NFL. He had 56 tackles that year and has since played for the Tennessee Titans in 2011.

Smith hasn’t played for an NFL team this season.

Routt was the Chief's replacement for the departed Brandon Carr, who now plays for the Dallas Cowboys. He recorded 21 tackles this year and most recently played in an Oct. 28 loss to the Oakland Raiders, where he intercepted a pass. Routt was inactive this past week against the Chargers with a hamstring injury.
