Jovan Belcher’s agent never saw it coming

Joe Linta would never take on a client that he didn’t regard with high esteem, and that’s how he saw Belcher.

Some of those who knew Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher best are in disbelief Saturday after the player murdered his girlfriend then later committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

Belcher’s agent, Joe Linta, told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King that “Jovan was a happy, proud father, with pictures of his baby on his Facebook page. This is shocking. Something went crazy wrong, and we’ll probably never know what it is.”

Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, at their home and then committed suicide at one of the Chiefs’ facilities.

“I never take on anyone as a client I wouldn’t be proud to take home and spend time with my wife and kids,” Linta said. “Jovan was one of those type of people.

“There’s no word for this other than shocking. That’s all I can think of.”

According to King, a police spokesman said that Belcher thanked head coach Romeo Crennel and Linta before shooting himself in the head. Crennel and Linta both are in disbelief in the actions of the former undrafted free agent out of Maine, who was a productive member of the linebacking core for the Chiefs.

Belcher leaves behind a 3-month-old daughter in Kansas City.
