Saints vs. Giants 2012: ‘That’s 3 back flips’

Eli Manning tossed four touchdowns, but David Wilson set a franchise record in total yards in a tremendous effort as a kick returner and running back.

Whether it was on offense or special teams, the New Orleans Saints couldn't stop David Wilson, who scored three touchdowns and set a franchise record for total yardage as the New York Giants coasted to a 52-27 victory.

Wilson entered the game with only 111 yards and one touchdown on his young career. But the rookie out of Virginia Tech had 327 total yards, mainly on kicks, to allow the Giants to hang half a hundred on the Saints. His returns continually set the team up in good field position, not to mention the time he got the team's scoring started off of a kick he brought back to the house. Although Eli Manning threw four touchdowns in the win, Wilson was an easy pick for Big Blue View as they selected their player of the game.

He had 227 on kickoff returns, including a 97-yard return for a touchdown. He scored touchdowns on runs of 6 and 52 yards, and totaled 100 yards rushing on 13 carries. That’s three back flips, and three times the Giants cringed and wished he would stop doing that to celebrate scores. Sunday, though, they needed every one of them.

The Giants did allow 27 points on a 300-yard passing day from Drew Brees. But they forced four turnovers -- two picks, two fumbles -- to negate a potentially-strong offensive performance. Although the scoreline was lopsided, New York only led by eight entering the fourth quarter before reeling off 17 straight points.

The win allowed the Giants to maintain a one-game lead in the NFC East standings with both the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys winning.
