Kirk Cousins is not RGIII, but the Redskins are doing just fine

The rookie signal caller from Michigan State is making the most of his first NFL start.

Kirk Cousins had a rough go of it at the beginning of his first NFL start, throwing an interception that led to a Cleveland touchdown on the Redskins’ second drive of the game. But the quarterback from Michigan State settled down nicely after that, making strong throws and taking advantage of some good field position to give Washington a 24-14 lead over the Browns midway through the third quarter.

Cousins, who is starting for the injured Robert Griffin III, was a head-scratching pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft when Washington gave up a plethora of picks to acquire RGIII in the first place. But the Skins saw enough in him to make him the backup, and he’s showing a lot of skill, including touchdown passes of 54 and 2 yards.

The Redskins are looking for their fifth straight win and a possible playoff berth, and RGIII should be back next week against Philadelphia. But even if he isn’t able to go, it looks like Washington has a more than capable backup.
