Ryan Mathews out for season with broken clavicle

Ryan Matthews furthered his fragile moniker Sunday when he broke his clavicle against the Carolina Panthers.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews will miss the final two games of the 2012 season after breaking his left clavicle in San Diego's 31-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The injury occurred on a carry early in the second quarter, and he did not return to the game after being examined in the locker room. This is the second time that Matthews, who finished Sunday’s game with seven touches for 30 yards, has suffered this particular injury this year as he also broke his right clavicle in the preseason.

Curtis Brinkley and Jackie Battle are expected to carry the load through Weeks 16 and 17.

Matthews will finish his third season in the NFL with a total of 685 rushing yards and one touchdown on 180 carries. He also chipped in 244 yards on 26 receptions.

While it might be a bit premature to slap a bust label on Matthews, the Chargers will undoubtedly be looking for some backfield help this offseason with their former first-round pick showing serious durability issues.
