Panthers vs. Chargers 2012: Cam Newton leads Carolina to easy victory

SB Nation’s Panthers blog reacts after the Carolina Panthers won their second consecutive game, beating the San Diego Chargers, 31-7, on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers beat the San Diego Chargers 31-7 on Sunday with running back Mike Tolbert leading the way against his former team. The Panthers improved to 5-9 on the season while San Diego fell to 5-9 and was officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Tolbert carried the ball nine times for 40 yards and a pair of first-quarter touchdowns that gave the Panthers an early 14-0 lead.

Touchdown passes from Cam Newton to DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith helped push Carolina's lead to 31-0 before San Diego ever got on the scoreboard. Newton finished the game 19 of 33 passing for 232 yards.

Over at Cat Scratch Reader, SB Nation’s Panthers blog, Jaxon said ‘this game was all Panthers from the coin toss.“

Cat Scratch Reader also praised Newton’s performance under center, writing:

Most important was his streak of passes without a turnover and his ability to protect the football even when getting sacked. Newton has now surpassed 150 passes with no INTs.
