Bills send Leodis McKelvin to IR

The explosive kick returner might have played his last game in a Bills uniform after being moved to the IR list on Thursday.

Buffalo Bills' cornerback and kick returner Leodis McKelvin has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury, the team announced on Thursday. In a corresponding move, the team has re-signed linebacker Kirk Morrison.

McKelvin, a former first-round pick, had been one of the top kick returners in the NFL this season, leading the league in punt return average (18.7 yards) and punts returned for touchdowns (two) and averaged 28.3 yards per return on kickoffs.

The fifth-year pro is in the final year of his rookie contract, and while he has been an excellent special teams player, he hasn’t developed into a solid contributor at the cornerback position. McKelvin will be an unrestricted free agent in March, and with his move to the IR list it is possible that the 27-year-old has played his last game in a Bills uniform.

In limited action at cornerback in 2012, McKelvin made 20 tackles, and had three pass deflections and one interception.
