Calvin Johnson approaching Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards mark

It seemed like only a matter of time before Megatron chased down the G.O.A.T. for the NFL single-season record for receiving yards. Will he do it on Saturday night against Atlanta?

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is flirting with Jerry Rice's 17-year-old record for most receiving yards in a single season, and he has two more games to get it done. Given the monster season he's had, it seems like a matter of if, not when, he eclipses the 1,848 mark set in 1995.

Up next for the Lions are the Atlanta Falcons, who boast the NFL's fourth-ranked defense when it comes to points allowed (18.5). But when it comes to passing yards allowed per game, Atlanta is allowing 229.5 yards per contest and is ranked 17th in that respect. The Lions figure to involve him early in hopes of helping him get into the annals of NFL history.

In two career games vs. the Falcons, Johnson has averaged 111 yards per game. He needs 167 more yards to set the mark, and under the circumstances, it’s reasonable to think he has a shot against Atlanta in what figures to be a high scoring game during primetime on a national stage.

The teams meet 8:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
