J.J. Watt moves closer to single-season sacks record

Can he break the single-season sacks record next week?

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt continued his pursuit of Michael Strahan on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. While the Texans lost, Watt got even closer to the single-season NFL sack record.

Watt recorded one sack on Sunday, bringing his season total to 20.5 with one more game to go. Houston travels to Indianapolis to face the Colts in the season finale. He will need two sacks to tie the record set by Strahan in 2001, 2.5 to break it. Watt sacked Andrew Luck three times in Week 14.

Watt became the ninth player in NFL history to record at least 20 sacks, the first to do it within his first two seasons since Derrick Thomas had 20 sacks for the Chiefs in 1990, also in his second professional season.

In addition to the sack in Week 16, Watt had two tackles and his fourth forced fumble of the season. He is among the league leaders in pass deflections, with 15. The 49ers’ Aldon Smith has 19.5 sacks and faces the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.
