NFL flexes Cowboys vs. Redskins to Sunday night in Week 17

The nation will be able to tune in Sunday night to witness the Redskins and the Cowboys, two bitter rivals, on NBC as they play for the NFC East title.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Redskins will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night next week, with the winner clinching the NFC East. NBC and the NFL have decided that the game is important and compelling enough to flex the game to Sunday night, at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Additionally, the Miami Dolphins game at the New England Patriots has been moved from 1 p.m. to 4:25 p.m. -- that will prevent the AFC playoff seeds all being decided during the early games.

The Redskins are 9-6 and have won six consecutive games, putting themselves in the driver's seat in the divisional title. In Week 16, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-20. Behind Robert Griffin III, the odds-on favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year, the Redskins are on the verge of their first division championship since 1999 and first playoff appearance since 2007.

The Cowboys are 8-7, and fighting their way toward the top of the division, but, after coming back from a 31-17 deficit in the third quarter against the New Orleans Saints, they lost in overtime, 34-31. Despite the setback, if they can beat the Redskins and move to 9-7 — even if the Giants win and move to 9-7 themselves — the Cowboys would own the tiebreaker and win the division.
