San Francisco 49ers' defensive end Justin Smith has been out of action since Dec. 16, and according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, it's because the 12-year veteran has a partially torn triceps.
Justin Smith injury: 49ers DE has a partially torn triceps, according to report
A partially torn triceps kept the 49ers’ veteran defensive leader out of the team’s 42-13 loss to the Seahawks last Sunday.

Smith's injury came in the third quarter of the 49ers 41-34 win over the New England Patriots, as he pushed off an offensive lineman. The 49ers have already lost one player to a torn triceps this year, as outside linebacker Parys Haralson suffered the injury in a preseason game against the Denver Broncos and was placed on injured reserve.
It is likely that Smith will require surgery to repair the torn muscle, but both he and the team remain hopeful that that he’ll be able to play through the pain and be on the field for the 49ers in the playoffs.
Ricky Jean-Francois started in Smith's place in the team's 42-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and led all 49ers with six tackles.
