Ed Reed fined $55,000 for hit on Victor Cruz, according to report

The veteran Ravens defender avoided suspension but received a hefty fine for Sunday’s hit.

USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has been fined $55,000 for a hit on New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz, according to a report from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

Reed was penalized for an illegal hit on a defenseless player during the fourth quarter of the Ravens' 33-14 win on Sunday after hitting Cruz near the sideline. The fine comes five weeks after the veteran defender was suspended one game after an illegal hit on Pittsburgh Steelers' receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

After that incident, the NFL suspended Reed for having committed what was deemed three illegal hits on defenseless players over the course of three seasons.

With only a fine, Reed will not miss Baltimore's regular season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals or need to worry about an appeal costing him a playoff game. Reed's wallet avoids a bigger blow as well, as missing a regular-season game would cost him more than $423,000.

In his 11th NFL season, Reed has totaled 58 tackles and four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.
