Ultimately, it was Miami’s miscues that led to the loss, including four fumbles and eight penalties that cost the Dolphins 92 yards. While only one of the four fumbles ended up as a turnover to the Patriots, it proved to be the difference in the game.
Kevin Nogle of SB Nation’s Miami Dolphins blog, The Phinsider, cited the opening drive that proved to be a sign of things to come for the Dolphins.
The problems started with the opening drive, when punter Brandon Fields fumbled the snap, picked it up, but was brought down at the Miami 12. From then on, the Dolphins struggled to make up for the mistake.
With the loss, the Dolphins’ hopes for a division title this season officially ended as the Patriots clinched the AFC East following Sunday’s game.
Now at 5-7 on the season, the Dolphins remain in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, but have a tall task ahead of them on Sunday when the team visits the San Francisco 49ers.
