Steelers vs. Ravens 2012: Charlie Batch plays ‘hero’ in emotional Pittsburgh victory

Pittsburgh fans were impressed with the clutch performance of Charlie Batch in the Steelers’ improbable 23-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

US PRESSWIRE

Despite playing with a third-string quarterback in Charlie Batch, the Pittsburgh Steelers grabbed an improbable 23-20 road win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. And it was Batch doing his best Ben Roethlisberger impression to lead the Steelers to victory.

The 37-year-old journeyman shook off a rough start and made play after play late in the game. Batch completed eight straight passes after an interception in the fourth quarter, including a game-tying strike to Heath Miller and five completions on the game-winning drive.

The performance was a memorable one for Batch, who is nearing the end of the line in the NFL. The quarterback showed a ton of emotion on the sideline after the victory, something that Neil Coolong of SB Nation’s Steelers blog Behind the Steel Curtain took notice of:

Charlie Batch became a hero in Pittsburgh in Week 13 of the 2012 season. Partially because of his amazing performance in the fourth quarter, but perhaps more because Batch did not play well leading up to that quarter.

Batch gave the Steelers everything he had, and he showed it after the game.

Batch will likely be heading back to the bench next week, as Roethlisberger should be ready to return to the lineup when Pittsburgh takes on the San Diego Chargers at Heinz Field. If this turns out to be Batch's last NFL start, he certainly went out on top.
