Tony Sparano to be fired by Jets, per report

After just one season, the New York Jets are set to let go offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano will not be retained by the organization, sources have told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Sparano was hired in the offseason after being fired as the Miami Dolphins head coach, a position he held for three seasons.

Entering their final game of the season against the Buffalo Bills (1 p.m. ET on CBS), the Jets rank 30th in the NFL in total offense. On Sunday, New York will start quarterback Mark Sanchez, who was benched last week for third-string quarterback Greg McElroy.

McElroy will not start Sunday because of a concussion.

Sparano was signed mainly because of his familiarity with the Wildcat offense, a scheme he helped bring to the league while he was with the Dolphins. The Jets, which signed him to a three-year contract worth $500,000 a year last January, are expected to make a lot of changes in this offseason.

It is unclear if the Jets are considering retaining defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, whose contract is up after this season, or special teams coach Mike Westhoff, who’s in the same boat as Pettine.
