Adrian Peterson breaks 2,000 yards rushing

Still pushing for the overall record, Adrian Peterson joins an elite club.

Minnesota Vikings' running back Adrian Peterson is still pushing for record he was seeking, but still joins an elite club today as he becomes the seventh running back in NFL history to run for over 2,000 yards in a season.

Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2,105 yards is still in reach, but in eclipsing 2,000 yards Adrian Peterson becomes the first running back since Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans joined the 2000 yard club in 2009. Entering last week's game against the Houston Texans there was hope Peterson could comfortably best Dickerson's record, but in failing to reach 100 yards rushing it made it a little more difficult. Now with a big first half in Minneapolis, the record hags in the balance.

It has been a remarkable season for Adrian Peterson, even if he fails to reach the overall record. In only six games he failed to reach 100 yards rushing, and ran for over 150 yards on six occasions. Averaging 6.0 yards per carry, Peterson has been a huge reason why the Minnesota Vikings have been ensconced in an unexpected playoff hunt, just a year removed from a 3-13 season.
