NFL playoff picture: NFC seeding waiting on Redskins-Cowboys results

The Redskins and Cowboys fight for the final spot while the Seahawks wait to see where they travel next week.

Andy King

There is only one game left in the 2012 NFL regular season and that will be the final piece to the playoff puzzle. Other than the Cowboys or Redskins winning the NFC East after their divisional matchup on Sunday night, the rest of the NFC playoffs have been decided, and there was some movement at the top.

The 49ers moved up past the Green Bay Packers to the number two seed after beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-13 San Francisco finishes the regular season with a record of 11-4-1 and the 49ers will get a bye week for the second year in a row.

The Packers were in line to get a bye week if they had beaten the Minnesota Vikings, but they were no match for Adrian Peterson and near-history as the Vikings won 37-34 on a game-winning field goal by Blair Walsh as time expired. The loss dropped the Packers to 11-5 and down to the number three seed. By beating the Packers, the Vikings ensured themselves a Wild Card and the number six seed, which means that the Packers and Vikings will meet in the first round. The Vikings finished the year at 10-6 and will go to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. Peterson fell nine yards shy of Eric Dickerson's single-season record, but helped lead the Vikings to the game-winner on the final drive.

The Seattle Seahawks had hopes of getting either the number two or number three seed, but their efforts against the Rams were futile with the 49ers beating the Cardinals and winning the division. Seattle beat the Rams 20-13 and won the first Wild Card berth however, and will play the winner of the Cowboys-Redskins Sunday night matchup. The Seahawks beat the Cowboys 27-7 in Week 2 in Seattle and have not played the Redskins this season. However, a Russell Wilson-Robert Griffin III matchup might drum up a little bit of interest.

It is the Seahawks second trip to the postseason in three years under Pete Carroll. It is the first time that they’ve gone to the playoffs with Carroll and a winning record.

Wild Card Round

Minnesota Vikings (6 seed) at Green Bay Packers (3 seed)

Seattle Seahawks (5 seed) at Winner of Cowboys vs Redskins

Divisional Round

(Lowest remaining seed) at Atlanta Falcons (1 seed)

(Highest remaining seed) at San Francisco 49ers (2 seed)
