Adrian Peterson fails to break single season rushing record

A big game wasn’t enough for Peterson to set the new record.

Minnesota Vikings' running back Adrian Peterson wasn't able to make history on Sunday, but he was close. Finishing his 2012 season with 2,097 yards.

Finishing 9 yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson's 2,105 yards, it ensured that the which has stood since 1984 remains. Adrian Peterson is now the sixth player to top the 2,000 yard, but be eluded by the final 105 yards. Following a difficult game against the Houston Texans last week, it looked like Adrian Peterson would fall short. Needing 208 yards against the Green Bay Packers was attainable for a running back who had topped the 200-yard mark on two occasions this year, but it seemed unlikely. Ultimately a close game meant both teams needed to pass too much, and Peterson couldn't get enough touches.

Running for almost as many yards as his quarterback Christian Ponder has passed for this season, Peterson has been the driving force for Minnesota's offense on route to an unlikely playoff birth, just a year removed from a 3-13 season.

Adrian Peterson may have fallen just nine yards short, but regardless he's added an exclamation point to an already Hall of Fame-worthy career.
