Giants vs. Redskins 2012: New York gives up ground in NFC East standings

The Giants lost to the Redskins, 17-16, Monday night.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants failed to open up their NFC East division lead Monday falling to the Washington Redskins, 17-16, at FedEx Field.

The loss shrank the 7-5 Giants' division lead to one game, as the Redskins and Dallas Cowboys this week both improved their records to 6-6 overall. With four weeks to play in the regular season, New York will need to clean up its play if it'd like to win the division crown, says the SB Nation blog Big Blue View:

”The Giants’ offense held the ball for more than 20 minutes in the first half as New York built a 13-10 lead, but penalties and missed opportunities eventually doomed the Giants.

"The Giants committed a season-high nine penalties, many of them costly ones. A first-quarter intentional grounding on quarterback Eli Manning killed a drive and forced the Giants to settle for a field goal. A holding penalty on Will Beatty nullified a first down on the Giants' final drive, and they ended up punting."

Monday's end result not only tightened the division race with a quarter of the season remaining, but also put the Giants in a tight spot as they face probably the toughest part of their schedule - New York's schedule features the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles.

The moral of Monday night’s story: There’s a lot of work to do in Big Blue nation.
