The 2012 NFL season will kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 5, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Tuesday. The NFL’s season-opening game usually takes place on the Thursday before the rest of the Week 1 action starts, but hosting the game on that day would conflict with President Barack Obama’s Thursday night speech at the Democratic National Convention.

The NFL announced that the first game of the 2012 season will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The Super Bowl champion Giants will host the game.

The last NFL game played on a Wednesday? All the way back in 1948, when the Lions hosted the Rams.
The Super Bowl champion New York Giants will be the team hosting this year's opening game at MetLife Stadium. The game will be televised on NBC. We won't know their opponent until the NFL schedule is released in April, but the league generally likes to match two great teams, like the 2011 season opener between the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.
The rest of the Week 1 games will be played on Sunday, Sept. 9. The NFL has also previously scheduled a doubleheader for the initial “Monday Night Football” broadcast of the year, so expect that to happen again.
