Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has won the 2011 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Newton received 47 votes while Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton received three. He is the first quarterback to win the award since 2004 when Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger won it.

Despite the feeling that he would underperform by many pundits after being picked No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft, Newton set an NFL record for quarterback rushing touchdowns in a season with 14 and became the first player in league history to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500 in a season. He threw 21 touchdowns on the year and finished the year with 4,051 yards, breaking Peyton Manning's rookie mark.

Carolina improve from 2-14 to 6-10 under Cam’s watch, turning the team from a basement dweller into a franchise on the rise.
