Santonio Holmes Wants To Be The ‘Go-To Guy’ In Jets Offense

Santonio Holmes had a bad year in 2011. He’s hoping he will continue to be the ‘go-to’ guy for the New York Jets offense this year.

The New York Jets are making headlines with their recent signing of backup quarterback (for now) Tim Tebow. But they have plenty of other storylines to watch heading into next season, not least of which will be the play of wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

In the first year of a five-year deal in 2011, Holmes had the worst season of his career and made his frustrations very visible throughout the season.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Holmes is still vocal in his support of starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and believes he can bounce back in 2012. Holmes' personal coach, Tom Shaw, relayed the receiver's feelings.

"(Holmes) wants Sanchez to be successful," Shaw said. "He's never told me that this guy sucks. The one thing about Sanchez is that he doesn't want to make mistakes. And that's what Santonio says. Ben Roethlisberger would just let the ball go. He doesn't care if (Holmes) is triple covered. If Ben thought Santonio could make a play for him, he's shooting it in there. The more experience Sanchez gets, the more chances he'll take. Then you'll start seeing more balls to Santonio."

"He wants to be the go-to guy," Shaw said. "And he's getting paid to be the go-to guy."

Jets fans will certainly be hoping that Holmes can rebound and form a fearsome combination with Sanchez. Failing that, the team will be hoping that the receiver doesn’t become a distraction
