The Miami Dolphins have a new head coach in Joe Philbin and by NFL rules they're allowed to start their offseason program a little early. One player who is not attending the start of the Dolphins offseason program is pass rusher Cameron Wake, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports.
Cameron Wake Not Attending Start Of Miami Dolphins Workouts
Miami Dolphins pass rusher Cameron Wake is not present for the start of the Dolphins workouts, likely due to his desire for a new contract.
The report states Wake could be absent for “quite some time.”
Wake is due just $650,000 in 2012, which is terrific value for the team but not so much for the player. He started his career with the Dolphins in 2009 when he had 5.5 sacks and then blew up for 14 sacks in the 2010 season. He ended the 2011 season with 8.5 sacks. At 30 years old and only three years in the league, he has several productive seasons remaining so he can command a decent contract.
It was reported last month that the Dolphins were entering contract talks with several players, including Wake. That he’s not showing up for the start of the offseason program, which is voluntary, is a sign that he’s seeking a new deal. Wake really has no leverage but to hold out from the offseason program to make his desire for a new deal known.
Top pass rushers can command well over $10 million per year but Wake is 30 years old with a limited career production. It’ll be interesting to see what type of money he’s able to get.
