Ryan Leaf Charged With 4 Felonies

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was officially charged with four felonies in his home state of Montana, stemming from an arrest in March for burglary and drug possession. Court documents released Friday revealed that Cascade County had charged Leaf with two counts of burglary, and two counts of criminal possession of a dangerous drug.

The documents also shed a little more light on the crimes, indicating that investigators were initially tipped off by area postal workers who said the former Washington State standout received frequent packages for which he paid $500 cash. Leaf admitted to receiving ten packages when confronted with these initial allegations.

That initial admission led investigators to search Leaf’s home and car, and they discovered a pill bottle with an acquaintance’s name on it. Via the Associated Press:

“Ultimately, Leaf admitted to stealing some oxycodone pills from (the acquaintance),” the charging documents read. “Leaf admitted to ingesting six or seven of the oxycodone even though he does not have a prescription for oxycodone.”

Investigators determined he had entered the home without permission and was arrested. Then, two days later after being released, two other residents in the area reported finding a man in their home. He was later identified as Leaf, and the residents reported three different prescription meds missing. A search of Leaf’s home then led to a discovery of 89 hyrodcodone pills.

In addition to the four felony charges, Leaf now faces additional trouble in Texas, with these incidents likely in violation of his parole agreement after similar charges in that state. He is supposed to face the Montana charges first and then will be returned to Texas for resolution of the parole violation.
