All three received franchise tags in the off-season.

Three of the NFL’s biggest stars, all of whom received the franchise tag in the off-season, will not be participating with the rest of their teams when voluntary workouts start on Monday.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte and Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice are all opting to forgo the workouts while their agents try to work out long-term deals.

None of the three long-time veterans should be too affected by missing OTAs from their respective teams, although Brees’ absence will be more magnified because of the continuing fall out from the Saints’ Bountygate scandal.

For Forte, 26, and Rice, 25, these contract negotiations have extra significance, as the life span of feature NFL RBs isn’t very long. There are only so many carries in any running back’s body, and this off-season is probably their best chance to receive the type of long-term deal that could set them up for life.
