Maurice Jones-Drew Among Those Missing From Jaguars Workouts

The Jacksonville Jaguars begin their voluntary offseason workouts on Tuesday under new head coach Mike Mularkey. There will be a handful of players missing from the program that are recovering from injuries and/or surgeries such as defensive end Aaron Kampman and cornerback Rashean Mathis, but two players will be missing for other reasons.

Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee won't be showing up to the workouts, as he's yet to sign his franchise tag and is technically not under contract. Scobee is looking for a long-term contract extension and is unlikely to show up to the facility before that occurs.

The most notable player who will not be present is Jaguars Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who is still in California where he lives in the offseason. Jones-Drew was married April 1, but there have also been rumblings that the 2011 league leader in rushing could be looking for a new contract. This wouldn't be the first time Jones-Drew has skipped the voluntary portion of offseason workouts to stay in California, as he's done so the past two seasons.

Jones-Drew’s absence is news to Mularkey. He told reporters on Monday when asked if he anticipated any players aside from Scobee would miss the workouts: “Not that I know of as of right now. Again, this is a voluntary phase of our offseason and we’d like to have them all here, but we’ll find out when we get started in the morning.”
