NFL Schedule 2012: 49ers Vs. Packers In Week 1, According To Reports

On Monday, SB Nation San Francisco 49ers blog Niners Nation passed along a rumor that the 49ers would play the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field to open the 2012 NFL season. It sounds like that rumor has legs, as several other reporters from both San Francisco and Green Bay have now reported the same -- 49ers vs. Packers at 4:15 p.m. ET in Week 1.

The NFL has yet to announce the full schedule so these reports remain, for the moment, unconfirmed. The only game the league has announced is the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, Sept. 5 to kick off the season.

Count Niners Nation among those 49ers fans who think playing one of the league’s best teams early in the year would be a good thing.

If the 49ers do open on the road at Green Bay, we’ll get a chance to figure out where this team is right off the bat. Team hopes will change dramatically over the course of a season, so there is only so much to be said about a week one performance. Nonetheless, I like the idea of opening in what would be a high profile contest between two of the biggest favorites in the NFC.

Stay tuned to this StoryStream for more on the 2012 NFL schedule release.
