NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to a group of bloggers, including several from SB Nation, on Thursday afternoon in the hours before the start of the 2012 NFL draft. Among the topics discussed was the possible cancellation of the Pro Bowl. A report emerged Thursday that the commissioner was “likely” to suspend the Pro Bowl due to the poor quality of play.
Ideas To Fix Pro Bowl Include Pay Based On Performance
Goodell confirmed that the league was considering canceling the game if they couldn’t find a way to improve it. One of the ideas Goodell shared was an interesting one -- the prospect of basing the pay Pro Bowlers receive on their performance in the game.
Goodell: Well let me share this much of it. Instead of having a winners and a losers share, you would take the pool of money and you would divvy it up based on performance during the game. So, you wouldn’t necessarily get a payment being on the winning and losing team. It would be for how you performed on the field when you were on the field.
An interesting idea, and one that could work. You’d have to quantify each player’s performance, though, including non-skill position players, which could be difficult.
