New Nike uniforms were not the only bit of NFL news released on Tuesday. The league’s tax returns were released, and they revealed that it was a very good year to be commissioner Roger Goodell. According to Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, the league’s tax returns revealed that Goodell earned $11.55 million for the year ending March 31, 2011.

The NFL filed its tax returns on Tuesday, revealing Roger Goodell’s $11.5 million salary last year. Goodell was not the highest paid executive in the NFL, though.
Goodell was not the highest paid employee. That honor belongs to Steve Bornstein, NFL Network President and CEO, who made $12.2 million.
The league’s Form 990, the tax return document for tax-exempt organizations, revealed additional details about spending. The biggest expense outside of salaries was for rent; the NFL spent $11.4 million in that area. Travel was on the list as well, costing the NFL $7.6 million. The NFL also paid Microsoft $2.7 million for software.
The league's finances are public because of the NFL's status as a tax-exempt organizations. Teams are for-profit entities; their financial information does not have to be disclosed, except in the case of the publicly held Green Bay Packers.
