Longtime Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Joe Avezzano has passed away, the Cowboys confirmed to multiple media outlets on Thursday. Avezzano was in Italy when he suffered a heart attack, which lead to his death. He was 68 years old.

Avezzano is best remembered for his decade-plus run as the Cowboys special teams coach from 1990-2002.

He was still coaching right before his death with the Milan Seamen of the Italian Football League. He left the Cowboys as the Bill Parcells era started in 2003 and later coached in the AFL and for the Oakland Raiders.

Avezzano, a former college football player, started his coaching career in 1968 as an assistant with Florida State. Before taking the Cowboys job, he also coached for Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Oregon State and Texas A&M.
