John Harbaugh On Asterisks

The draft is over, and a media vacuum is settling over the NFL world. Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh stepped up to help fill the void on Tuesday morning with comments about asterisks and the Patriots that are sure ignite an utterly meaningless debate among partisans.

He was making an appearance on Baltimore radio to promote a charity event when things took a turn for the worse. The host asked Harbaugh about bending the rules to get an edge over the competition. Harbaugh bit.

In the end, everything is brought before the light of day, when it’s all said and done. What happens, even the thing in New England, no matter whether those things had any impact on whether they won their championships or not, they got asterisks now. It’s been stained.

Controversy ensued. Outrage spewed forth in nonsensical 140-character increments.

Harbaugh explained his statement further:

To me, it’s never worth it. You have to figure out ways to use the rules to your advantage, you have to figure out ways to make the most of everything. We have new work rules here as far as what we can do and what we can’t do with our players, and we’re going to make the most of it.

It really is among the more minor wildfires to sweep through the NFL landscape. And dumb. Harbaugh was really just stating the obvious, not trolling the poor unrequited Patriots fans. Like it or not, Spygate will always hang over their 2001 Super Bowl win. Ditto the Saints with Bountygate.

If you ever get sick of listening to coaches and players rattle off the same dull talking points, this is a classic example of why that happens.
