For the first time since 2009, the New England Patriots have a defensive coordinator. The Patriots named Matt Patricia to the role on Thursday. He becomes the first to hold that title since Dean Pees in 2009.
Matt Patricia Named Patriots Defensive Coordinator
The New England Patriots promoted Matt Patricia to the defensive coordinator position, making him the first person to hold that title since 2009.

Patricia is a familiar face around the Patriots’ locker room. He started with the team in 2004 as an offensive coaching assistant, and he was promoted to assistant offensive line coach a year later. Patricia moved the defensive side of the ball in 2006, taking over as the Pats’ linebackers coach, a role he held for five seasons. Last year, he coached the safeties.
Defensive assistant Brian Flores will take over as the safeties coach, while defensive backs coach Josh Boyer will coach cornerbacks.
New England also hired Steve Belichick, eldest son of head coach Bill Belichick, as a coaching assistant.
Offensive assistant George Godsey will coach tight ends, replacing Brian Ferentz.
