Jaguars Starting QB Is Blaine Gabbert; No Competition

There was some thought that free agent quarterback Chad Henne could challenge Blaine Gabbert for the Jaguars starting quarterback position, but head coach Mike Mularkey says there’s no competition.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert started 14 games as a rookie during the 2011 NFL season, and struggled to say the least. He had the worst season for a quarterback last season and commanded the worst ranked passing offense in the NFL, passing for under 160 yards per game.

In free agency, the Jaguars signed quarterback Chad Henne and some thought that Henne might push Gabbert for his starting job. Henne has some starting experience playing for the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him in the second-round of the 2008 NFL Draft but left the club in free agency.

According to Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey, there isn’t a competition at the quarterback position.

“No, it’s not (a competition). Blaine’s our starting quarterback,” Mularkey told NFL Networks Albert Breer over the phone. “We feel good about him.”

The Jaguars coaching staff has already begun to work on Gabbert’s fundamentals, including his footwork, which was a big issue his rookie season. The expectation is for Gabbert to take a big step forward in his second season in the NFL, but from the sounds of it, he’s not going to lose his job before any games are actually played.
