Jaguars Say Maurice Jones-Drew Wants Contract Extension

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey revealed on Tuesday that the team's super star running back Maurice Jones-Drew was skipping offseason workouts in the hopes of landing a contract extension, reports Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union.

Jones-Drew was not on hand for the team’s OTAs on Tuesday and skipped veteran workouts prior to the draft. Some had speculated that a contract extension was at the heart of Jones-Drew’s absence. Mularkey confirmed it for the first time.

Mularkey maintained a positive outlook in light of the situation, referring back to his experiences in Buffalo.

“I let little things I had no control over suck the energy out of me. I’m not going to let that happen this time around.”

The Jaguars signed Jones-Drew to a five-year contract extension in April 2009 worth $30.95 million with $17.5 million guaranteed. Last season, he rushed for 1,606 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 43 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns as the most viable contributor to Jacksonville’s offense.
