Matt Leinart, Raiders Reach 1-Year Contract Agreement

Matt Leinart has officially tied the knot with the Oakland Raiders, signing a one-year contract to back up former USC teammate Carson Palmer on Tuesday. Leinart worked out with the Raiders, and signed shortly after.

The Raiders also worked out former Peyton Manning backup Jim Sorgi, but Leinart seemed to be the favorite to earn a new contract throughout the process. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp was the Houston Texans' quarterback coach while Leinart was backing up Matt Schaub, so the two know each other well.

Leinart will compete with Terrelle Pryor and Rhett Bomar for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. The former Heisman winner has yet to prove he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL after being selected 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals during the 2006 draft, though as an insurance policy he should be more than serviceable.
