Hakeem Nicks’ Injury Could Run Into Regular Season

Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks may miss the beginning of the 2012 NFL season because of a fractured foot he sustained Thursday during the morning session of New York's organized team activities. Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot while running, and the team quickly announced that he will have surgery to insert a screw on Friday. Nicks will likely miss all of training camp during an expected 12-week recovery, and coach Tom Coughlin even indicated that his return for the start of the 2012 season could be in doubt.

Via Brian McIntyre of NFL.com:

Asked if Nicks will be ready for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, Sept. 5, Coughlin said that "it's probably going to be close."

"He feels very confident about it," Coughlin said. "The doctors have expressed it as being something that they think will heal very, very well."

Nicks is a physically talented wideout who’s had some injury problems during his tenure in New York, and this latest non-contact injury is another setback. He’s is coming off an impressive postseason, in which he led the league with 28 catches for 444 yards and four touchdowns during the Giants run to the Super Bowl.
