The Atlanta Falcons signed Ovie Mughelli to a six-year contract extension after the 2007 season, making him the highest paid fullback in NFL history at the time. On Tuesday morning the Falcons released Mughelli.

After the 2010 season Mughelli was named to the NFL All-Pro team for the second time in his career and was selected to his first ever NFL Pro Bowl. For the 2011 season, the 31-year old fullback played in just seven games, dealing with lower leg injuries for most of the season.

Mughelli was essentially a blocking fullback only, rarely getting carries or catching the football out of the backfield and was set to make $3 million for the 2012 season.

The Falcons drafted Wisconsin fullback Bradie Ewing in the fifth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft, making Mughelli expendable.
